Dublin Special and Cheney Special. Both Ora Smith casting streamers. The Dublin wing is mallard the Cheney wing is teal. Pure speculation on my part but the Cheney Special may have been a Harry Cheney pattern. Harry had a hardware store in Dover, NH and he was a fly tyer. I’ve seen a great deal of his flies and this would fit as one of his. Cheney was said to have influenced Jim Warner to the use of marabou. Each of these flies are great little patterns for trout in New Hampshire. Tied on Partridge Heritage Streamer Hooks and using some Ewing hen. Three casting streamers from Ora Smith. Orange Wonder, Teal and Silver and Canada Square Tail. All tied to the recipe, the Teal and Silver can be tied with a white throat too. Originally tied as a tandem and called Mike Methe’s Tandem Streamer. I tied this as a single on a Partridge Heritage Streamer Hook. Ora was known for naming his flies after people who he tied them for. I’ve no other history on this. One interesting aspect is he used bronze mallard as the shoulders. Not something he did all that often that I could see from his patterns. He did use the bronze mallard on other flies as a wing but not as a shoulder. Ewing gray inner wing with a burnt orange on the outside it got the color very close to the original. Spenser Bay trolling fly. Originated by Horace P. Bond of Bangor, Maine. This fly is for trolling for landlocked salmon on Moosehead Lake. Orange Sprite Streamer Pattern. This Rangley style streamer can be used trolling or casting on dark cloudy days. The fly was originated in 1965 and tied using a wood duck shoulder which became popular for many trolling flies. Originally called the Coronos Killer. This fly was developed by Hank Northbridge for Harry Coronos who wanted to add the color red to the gray ghost pattern. Eventually the name was changed to the Red Gray Ghost. One of those excellent patterns for Winni and many other big NH lakes. Tied as both a tandem and on a single hook. Here it’s done on a Partridge Heritage Streamer Hook in 9x. Using some Ewing streamer feathers and Solarez Bone Dry Black. Recently I met one of Hanks friends who shared with me the tandems were often tied very long 5 or more inches. Blue Magic Streamer a Jim Warner pattern. Great attractor fly with all the colors in it. The key with this is to get the correct color shoulder which is a light blue mallard. I dyed these myself to get the correct shade. The wing has three colors of Ewing streamer feathers and it’s tied on a Partridge Heritage Streamer Hook with some Solarez bone dry black. Silver Smelt an Ora Smith pattern. This fly is listed on several books and can be tied as a tandem. I’ve seen it with the silver head, black eye with just a white pupil and also with a small red pupil inside the white as I have done on this one. The story behind this fly is very interesting. Ora’s wife was an excellent fly angler and she many times was the person who tested his patterns out first. She stood behind him as he was working one day tying flies and said I would like you to tie me the following pattern. She read off the materials, silver body, light dun wings and a red throat. Ora added the eye as many of his flies had eyes painted on them. This is tied on a Partridge Heritage Streamer Hook using Ewing light dun streamer saddles and Ewing red hen. Solarez to seal in the painted eyes and to add to the durability of the pattern. Jim Warner’s Blue Magic. This is an attractor pattern, works well in the spring as a trolling fly and then tied smaller in the fall for brook trout. This fly has one challenge which is the mallard shoulder...in order to get the correct color I had to dye it myself. It was blessed as correct by #owlsroostoutfitters who knew Jim well and the correct color. Tied on a Partridge Heritage Streamer Hook 9x using Ewing streamer feathers. It hard to see but the body is silver with a flat copper rib. A little R & D work with the Ewing Lavender Grizzly. First one is golden olive over the lavender grizzly. Second one is lavender grizzly under golden olive under solid lavender. The shoulders are slightly different but basically yellow gp body feather under a rust or red gp body feathers. In NH the golden olive sometimes works real well in the deep, cold and clear lakes like Sunapee and Newfound. The Ewing streamer feathers are perfect for these Smelt patterns. Great Brook Smelt. Going to give this a try when we can get in the lakes in a few weeks. In NH we have a lot of success with copper bodies and teal shoulders. This fly is tied on a Partridge Heritage Streamer Hook #2 9x. I’ve used three Ewing Streamer Feathers per side from my signature series. The inner is a light blue followed by our new color lavender dyed over grizzly and the outer most feather is lavender. The color lavender was used in many older patterns and all but disappeared. Over a year ago Ewing helped me bring back this color. Celebrating 10 years!!! In the winter of 2009/2010 I was offered a job at a lodge in Alaska. I was torn about heading up due to a few family obligations. After some tough deliberations, in February of 2010 I decided to forgo Alaska, stay home in New England and try my luck at starting my own guide service with the intention that I would do it for a season then head north to the great land. Little did I know what direction it was all headed. It all started with a sketch and a goal. I took maybe a half-dozen trips that first year, trying to juggle a full-time job and grinding my off hours working on a website, perfecting accesses, networking, finding fish, etc, etc. Here we are 10 years later and all the grinding has paid off. Meredith Special tandem fly. Ora Smith pattern he made up for Richard Murdock to fish on Winni in Meredith. The fly can be tied with a mallard shoulder but this one is the original. I went back an forth on the wing color trying to match the different photos I have of this fly, some are more brown than olive anther the opposite so I tried to split it and came out with these.
