Beginning in the late 1700s, the English reel maker Onesimus Ustonson advertised brass multiplying winches in both “stop” and “plain.” Predating the American multiplying reel by at least thirty years, it was the first of its kind. Manufacturing continued beyond the passing of Onesimus in 1810 to approximately 1855 when the Ustonson name was no longer associated with the company.
